Caves have been always present in the history of humanity as, since prehistoric Ages, they have been used as dwellings or burial places.
In the Middle Ages, between VI and XIV c. A.D.,they became a new resource for small rural communities.
Houses,work-shops,churches,stables,and stores were created by digging into the rock thus creating rock-settlements which tell us about the activities, religious values, economy, social organization, art, and architecture of the Middle Ages.
Lama D’Antico rock-settlement
The Lama D’Antico rock-settlement is a Medieval village, hidden among olive groves, which flourished inside a small ravine or “lama” on whose sides there are many caves dug by man.
Time seems to have stopped here and we can clearly imagine daily life in the Middle Ages visiting the caves all gathered around the village-centre where the church stands.
